Tangled Hearts by Rosemary Morris is set in the reign of the last Stuart monarch, Queen Anne; reigned 1702 -1714.
Here is the first extract from the diary of Richelda Shaw, the heroine.
“Dear Diary,This is my first entry, so please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Richelda Shaw. My life is a tale of riches to rags. As the daughter of Baron and Baroness Shaw, my early childhood was privileged, but after James IInd fled from the British Isles, my father, an honorable man, was perplexed. Having sworn an oath of allegiance to the former king, his conscience did not allow him to swear fealty to another monarch during James IInd’s life time. So Father followed his sovereign lord to France leaving me with my mother. That was when my problems began. A wicked tax collector made claims on the estate and by the time my parents died I was penniless and alone.
